Historical
epistemological analysis in mathematical education:
Negative numbers and the nothing ness.
Cognitive processes displayed by students as they solve tasks involved
in the transition from arithmetic to algebra are analyzed from an historical
epistemological standpoint that has chosen three key texts in the study
of negative numbers and the zero. The historical texts are: The Jiu
Zhang Suanshu (Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Arts) 1st Century,
Le Triparty en la Science des Nombres by Nicolas Chuquet, 15th Century
and A Treatise on Algebra by George Peacock, 19th Century.
